Queen of Huipil Festival 2024

Queen of Huipil (Reina del Huipil) is a cultural tour to one of the most beautiful & colourful festivals of Mexico. It’s a festival to honor the tradition of textiles and ancestral languages with art, dance, music and party, at Cuetzalan, Puebla (MEXICO).

Review

Every October 4th, Cuetzalan community appoints a young indigenous woman as queen of the festival and to be an ambassador of the traditional female garment worn named «Huipil» during their annual celebration to honor Saint Francis of Assisi. A selected group of young women (15 to 20 years old), representing Cuetzalan’s 168 villages, compete for the title parading before the judges at town’s main square, wearing large and intricate wool headgear, carrying a ribbon in their hands, sporting regional dresses and barefoot.

As well, these young women, with a proficient in a local native language and Spanish, demonstrate a passion for local traditions in a bilingual speech before the judges. They listen all speeches and vote by dropping a ribbon in a box of the same color as the one their candidate carries. After all votes are added, the box is opened, the ribbons are thrown into the air to be counted. Then their new queen has been elected. The party starts by carrying on their queen on her throne across town with dances and music.
